Shopify Protect Eligibility: Which Orders and Disputes Are Covered?

Shopify Protect can cover eligible fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks, but a Shop Pay transaction is not automatically a protected order. Check the merchant relationship, order contents, fulfillment conditions and displayed protection status before relying on coverage. Then check the actual dispute reason: a protected order can still receive a type of claim that Shopify Protect does not cover.

The checks below reflect Shopify's published guidance reviewed on 6 September 2026. Use the current order page and program terms for a live decision, especially when the order has been edited or fulfilled through several routes.

Check merchant and order eligibility first

Shopify's published requirements identify United States merchants with a United States Shopify Payments account. Eligible orders use Shop Pay; Shop Pay Installments is excluded. The order must contain only physical goods requiring shipment. Digital items and in-store pickup make an order ineligible, including mixed orders. Only the initial subscription order can qualify. Shopify separately describes protection for qualifying Managed Markets orders processed with Shopify Payments. Review the complete order eligibility guidance for your configuration.

Turn that into an order-level check rather than a store-wide assumption. A store selling both physical and digital products might have eligible and ineligible baskets on the same day. A subscription business might have an eligible first purchase and uncovered recurring orders from the same customer.

Do not infer eligibility from a successful payment, low fraud recommendation or the presence of a familiar checkout logo. Those facts answer different questions. The evidence you need is the actual order's qualifying conditions and Shopify Protect status.

Preserve eligibility through fulfillment

The current guidance requires fulfillment with valid tracking within seven days of placement and transit within ten days. All non-refunded items must be fulfilled through supported carriers. Changing the shipping address after checkout voids coverage. Verify carrier eligibility and timing against Shopify's fulfillment conditions.

The operational implication is that creating a label and handing over a parcel are separate milestones. Your team should be able to determine whether the order has the required tracking and whether the carrier has recorded the required movement. A warehouse status alone should not be treated as proof of the carrier event.

Split fulfillment needs careful review. When different warehouses or carriers handle the same basket, the order-level outcome depends on the whole required fulfillment. Give the person checking coverage visibility into all shipments rather than only the first parcel.

Avoid making an address change merely to preserve a shipping workflow without considering its protection consequence. If a customer requests a change, review the legitimate order-handling options and record the resulting coverage status. Protection should inform the decision, not justify sending goods somewhere the customer has said is wrong.

Read the status as a current condition

Shopify distinguishes an order for which protection is available from one already protected. Its documented order filters include eligible, protected and not-protected states. Use the protection-status guidance to interpret the actual label.

A useful internal check has three entries: the observed label, when it was checked and any remaining fulfillment condition. “Shopify Protect available” should not be translated into “covered regardless of what happens next.”

If no protection status appears, investigate eligibility rather than inserting a reassuring label in your own system. If the order changes, check again. An exported status from before fulfillment may no longer describe the position when a dispute arrives.

For a hypothetical warehouse review, an order marked eligible on Monday still awaits carrier possession. The team records that milestone as outstanding. When the order is later shown as protected, it updates the review. This process does not create coverage; it helps staff avoid claiming coverage before Shopify shows the relevant state.

Match the dispute reason to the protection

The program's scope concerns fraudulent and unrecognized chargebacks on protected orders. Other complaints, such as goods not received or not as described, follow their applicable dispute process. For covered cases, Shopify describes handling the chargeback and reimbursing the disputed amount and associated fee, with related payout adjustments. Check Shopify's chargeback handling guidance.

Use this decision matrix when a case arrives:

Order finding Dispute finding Merchant interpretation
Protected Covered fraudulent or unrecognized category Check the Shopify Protect handling shown for the case
Protected Product or service complaint Follow the applicable ordinary response route
Eligible but conditions incomplete Any category Do not presume final protection
Not protected or ineligible Fraudulent claim Use the available standard dispute process

A hypothetical store has a protected shipped order disputed because the buyer says the item is damaged. The protection label does not convert that product complaint into a covered fraud claim. The merchant should assess the actual complaint and available response options.

Keep a concise coverage record

For any order where protection affects a decision, retain the order reference, observed protection status, payment route, relevant fulfillment milestones and later dispute category. Link to the authoritative Shopify record instead of copying unnecessary customer information.

When the displayed status and your understanding disagree, ask Shopify to clarify the specific order. Do not issue a second financial action based solely on an expected reimbursement or assume the case has disappeared from every monitoring measure.

The practical standard is straightforward: verify eligibility, complete the required conditions, confirm the status and read the dispute reason. Each check answers a different part of the coverage question, and all of them matter before the merchant can rely on Shopify Protect.
